Labs

We hang out in the EEE Department's 5th floor labs (Room 505). If you need access to these labs after 6pm on weekdays, or anytime on weekends, then please see Getting EEE Card Access.

Laser Cutter

Disclaimer: Failure to follow these guidelines will result in removal of privilege to use the laser cutter

Access

• Inductions are every Wednesday at 6pm. (term time)
• Please read the introductory material on the ICRS Wiki before attending.
• Use of the laser cutter is prohibited to all that have not undertaken the induction.

Safety

General Do not lean on the machine at any time, It can cause accidental operation of the buttons and fatigue on the wheels of the machine. Never cut anything that is not on the ‘safe to cut’ list. All safety considerations and proper use of the machine is the sole responsibility of the owner of the card used to access the machine. Never lend your card to someone for the cutter, either help them out or ask them to attend the next induction.

In case of fire Small flares are normal. Any sustained fire should be extinguished by lifting the lid of the laser and blowing it out. If the fire does not immediately go out, use the CO2 extinguisher mounted next to the cutter. Use a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach to using the extinguisher. In case of major fires, follow the departmental guidelines.

Use and procedures

Every time you use it

The laser must be supervised during operation ALWAYS!

• Empty the water trap at the back into a bin.
• Check that there is not excessive build up of detritus underneath the cutting bed.
• Measure the thickness of the material. DO NOT CUT BENT MATERIAL – This will cause crashes
• Enter the thickness into the software. Double check it is correct.
• Check that your material is on the safe to cut list. If it is not, you may NOT cut it. To get it added check the internet for safety information then report to the lab manager.
• Ensure that the ventilation unit is on during the cut, and off when not in use.
